Don't give up green to greed
From John Haupert 11838 English Mill Road

Regarding the Dubuque City Council meeting, Feb. 18: Often I have stifled my opinions on matters tended by our honorable council members and our fine mayor.

On Page 8E Feb. 27 Telegraph Herald, there is a preposterous recommendation by the city manager, whom I sincerely respect, but on this issue I take umbrage with his proposal.

To wit: That the city of Dubuque offers to lease to Iowa Wireless Services the property known as Madison Park. To actually propose that the city dispose of an interest by lease agreement of a historic landmark in Dubuque is preposterous. Where is the city parks commissioner hiding?

There is an abundance of private property in and around Dubuque to fulfill the wants and needs of this communications systems company.

Green community leaders cannot destroy our fair city for the greed of a company that has in its best interest lining the pockets of investors. It is an initial ripping apart the heart of The Miracle on the Mississippi. New technology will replace wireless service in the near future, and then we can show our children and their children the conveyances of obsolescence.

We will also be able to tell them stories that start with a fairy tale opening: Once upon a time, in our fair city, there were beautiful parks.

Is Eagle Point Park next?
