Lung transplant recipient recovering

Dubuque lung transplant recipient Nick LeGrand is recovering in a Houston hospital.

"Everything is going fine," said Nick's father, Mark LeGrand.

Nick LeGrand, 13, received a long-awaited lung transplant during a 13-hour procedure that ended Tuesday. Nick and his mother, Kelly, have been living in Houston, awaiting a transplant, since late December.

Doctors kept Nick sedated as his body slowly became accustomed to the lungs.

"They woke him up late last night," Mark LeGrand said.

Tuesday's procedure was Nick's second transplant. A rare lung ailment called primary pulmonary hypertension led to his first transplant a decade ago.
