Dubuquers are known for their frugality. So it might come as a shock that the city boasts the most expensive burger in America.
The latest ACCRA Cost of Living Index lists the price of an average hamburger in Dubuque at $4.29, well above the national average of $3.12, according to CNBC.com.
The Council for Community and Economic Research's index compares the cost of individual consumer products and services in more than 300 U.S. cities. The index tracks everything from beer to real estate.
Looking for America's cheapest burger? Try Charlottesville, Va., where the average price is $2.09.
And if you want to wash that burger down with a cold one, the nation's lowest price for a six-pack of beer can be found in Fitchburg-Leominster, Mass., at $6.99, according to CNBC's Web site. It's much more pricey to drink in Fairbanks, Alaska, where an average six-pack of beer costs $11.20.
Donation drive yields 191 bikes for journey to El Salvador
The final count for the Pedals for Progress May 9 bike drive was 191.
In addition, seven sewing machines were donated along with various spare parts, tubes and bike racks.
With the help of Joe Bitter Jr. at Key City Transport, the bikes arrived at the P4P warehouse in New Jersey on June 8. On Saturday, they were to be loaded on a cargo ship bound for El Salvador to a group named CESTA.
The Dubuque Bicycle Club and the Hempstead High School Octagon Club sponsored the drive, held in the high school's parking lot. Anyone who donated a used bike or sewing machine was asked to give $10 for shipping. The $10 donation covers about a third of the cost to send the bikes abroad.
