Don't let the name fool you. Gypsy Dave and the Stumpjumpers is anything but a hillbilly band.

"The name confuses people," said band leader Dave Washousky in a phone interview from his rural, northwest Pennsylvania home base. "The term "stumpjumper" is a regional name for people from our area of Pennsylvania. We're just proud to be where we're from."

Washousky and his band will bring their brand of rural Americana sound to Monks Kaffee Pub, in Dubuque, June 19.

Composed of three members, the band focuses its energy on the folk and country stylings of Americana music.

"The core of what we do is songwriting," Washousky said. "Our live show offers a broad range of things. We really like having a good time, but we like to mix it up with serious songs, and keep it fresh."

Gypsy Dave and the Stumpjumpers' saw their beginnings in 2005.

"I spent a lot of time just writing songs and figuring out how to do this music thing," Washousky said. "I needed a bass player, so a good friend of mine from college who played trumpet taught himself

upright bass. We picked up a violin player along the way and just began writing and playing."

Since then, the band has woven an extensive evolving network throughout the country, performing at several folk festivals and recording a CD in Nashville, released May 12.

"It's all about creating an experience and music that you hope people can relate to in some way, and come along on the ride," Washousky said.
