Family friends have set up an assistance fund for the Madison, Wis., family that crashed outside Maquoketa, Iowa, leaving the parents dead and their three children injured.

Jane McCarthy, a neighbor of Henry Joe and Sarah Anne O’Connell, who were killed in the crash, said their children are not alone during this difficult time.

“We’ve got a group here (in Dubuque) and we’ve got a group there (in Iowa City) and we’ve always been here, as soon as we heard the news. Friends from Madison and guardians came immediately. We’ve got two camps going,” she said.

The driver of the van that crashed, 15-year-old Sarah B. O’Connell, and her brother, Colman, 13, are at Mercy Medical Center-Dubuque, where they were listed in good condition Monday.

Their 10-year-old sister, Maeve, was airlifted to the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics.

McCarthy said there are a “good number” of people at both hospitals, supporting each other and working with medical staff.

“They’ve never been alone. Other than, obviously, until the time when we could get here, two hours,” she said.
