City hires Indianapolis man as chief of police

Terry Johnston has been hired as the city of Guttenberg's chief of police.

The hiring was approved at Monday's meeting of the Guttenberg City Council.

Johnston, of Indianapolis, will begin his duties in the middle of July, Guttenberg City Manager Barry Dykhuizen said.

Prior to this position, Johnston worked as an officer/detective for the Phoenix Police Department for 18 years. He also holds a master's degree in social justice from the University of Illinois and a doctorate from Newburgh Theological Seminary in Newburgh, Ind.

Johnston replaces George Morteo, who was terminated by the Guttenberg City Council on March 24 for "unacceptable performance."
