Dubuque man killed in skid steer accident

A Dubuque man was killed at his home Friday when he was pinned by a piece of machinery he was working on, police said.

Merlin J. Merfeld, 76, of 380 Cedar Cross Road, was pronounced dead at the scene. Police arrived at his home at 10:40 a.m. Friday to find him pinned underneath a skid steer loader, a small excavator. He was working under the left arm with the bucket in the raised position when it somehow dropped and fell onto him.

One of Merfeld's hobbies was to repair mechanical devices, such as cars, tractors and other machinery, according to an obituary that ran Sunday in the TH. Funeral services will be held today at 10:30 a.m. at St. Joseph the Worker Catholic Church.
