Boy Scout handbook now on Web
In addition to an iPhone application, the updated edition prompts young readers to log on to an accompanying Web site.

The traditional handbook that helps Boy Scouts "Be Prepared" now boasts some 21st century innovation.

Iowa native Robert Birkby authored the updated centennial edition of the Boy Scout Handbook and discussed some of the 21st century changes.

"One of the big differences is this has a dedicated Web site that goes with it," Birkby said.

The 12th handbook features a number of icons located throughout the edition.

The icons prompt readers to log onto the Web site -- www.bsahandbook.org -- for additional information on that topic.

"It's the way young people today absorb information," Birkby said. "They are very savvy about finding information online. The handbook helps guide them in that direction."

The original edition of the Boy Scout Handbook debuted in 1910. Called "A Handbook of Woodcraft, Scouting and Life-craft," the first guide was written by Boy Scouts of America's Chief Scout Ernest Thompson Seton. It included sections on the American Flag, camping, finding directions, signaling and Scouting games.

Boy Scouts of America serves more than 4.1 million youth between the ages of 7 and 20, with more than 300 councils throughout the United States.

An Eagle Scout, Sidney, Iowa, native and former conservation director at Philmont Scout Ranch in New Mexico, Birkby is well-versed in handbook editions.

"This is the third time I have written the handbook -- in 1990, 1998 and 2009," he said. "Each time it's been the right book for the time."

Other features of the handbook include:

* The first handbook iPhone application of the guide, available in September.

* Expanded sections on nutrition and physical fitness.

* Updated information on bullying, hazing, physical violence and avoiding Internet dangers.

* Tips on long-term personal financial management and budgeting.

Birkby points to the section on navigation as an example of the handbook's expanded focus.

"A lot of the information about navigation still gives information on using a map and compass," he said, "but it also gives information about GPS."

The 475-page paperback isn't all about the latest technology. It also features nostalgic illustrations from the previous 11 editions.
