GRATIOT, Wis. - Two Freeport, Ill., men fighting on a roadway were killed when a vehicle struck them Wednesday night. The men's identities have not yet been released. Lafayette County Sheriff's Department officials say the men had been passengers in a vehicle being driven south on Wisconsin 78 near the Wisconsin-Illinois border. An argument occurred at approximately 11:34 p.m., and the driver of the vehicle, Sharon L. Andrews, 32, of Darlington, stopped along Wisconsin 78. The two male occupants exited the vehicle and became involved in a physical altercation on the roadway. While they were fighting, the pair were struck by an automobile traveling north on Wisconsin 78, driven by Carrie A. Thompson, 33, of Monroe. Authorities say the men were not visible to Thompson because they were lying in the northbound lane of the road while fighting. Both men sustained serious injuries and were pronounced dead at the scene by Lafayette County Coroner Virginia Douglas. Thompson was transported by ambulance to an area hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. Two children in Thompson's vehicle were not injured. Andrews was cited by authorities for operating a motor vehicle while under the influence of intoxicants. Authorities continue to investigate the incident.
