SHULLSBURG, Wis. -- You can follow in the footsteps of a man who might become
a saint, and you also can follow the yellow brick (cheese) road during Shullsburg's Cheesefest on Saturday, Oct. 3.
The day-long festival of free entertainment begins with a run or walk, with the walking route taking a historical turn this year.
The 1-mile, non-competitive walk winds through streets named by Father Samuel Mazzuchelli, a pioneer missionary priest declared venerable by the Vatican.
The streets -- Judgement, Truth, Happy, Pious, Virtue, Goodness, Charity, Friendship and Mercy -- will be posted with historical tidbits about Shullsburg. The walk ends at St. Matthew's Church, one of the two dozen churches founded by Mazzuchelli. There are also 5K and 10K routes.
People can register at 8 a.m. the day of the event for $10. The entry fee includes $1 off the fire department breakfast, served from 7 a.m. to 10 a.m.
Other events include a book sale at the library, arts and crafts market, cheese curd-eating contest, cheese bake-off, hay rides, free grandstand entertainment, cheese sculptures at the Shullsburg Creamery and cheese factory tours at Roelli Cheese from 8 to 10 a.m.
And Cheesefest includes a first-ever Lafayette County Cheese Factory Hall of Fame, which will be held in a Water Street building. County cheese factories will have information and samples.
