CASCADE, Iowa -- A National Football League player and his three brothers will likely attract some outside attention for bringing Cascade its first grocery store in three years.

Cascade Mayor Greg Staner believes the community's buzz is more about milk and bread than a familiar face to sports fans.

"It's not really a name thing here," Staner said. "It's more just excitement with getting a grocery store.

He said it's a "big accomplishment for the whole city of Cascade," a community that has lived without a grocery store for three years.

Detroit Lions defensive end and former University of Iowa standout Jared DeVries and brothers Jay, Darian and Dusty are planning to open a Brothers Market grocery store near the U.S. 151 bypass in Cascade.

Brothers Market opened its first grocery store on May 23 in Parkersburg. The previous building was destroyed by an EF5 tornado in May 2008. The DeVries brothers are from the Parkersburg area.

The 16,000-square-foot store, at 105 Nixon St., is scheduled to open around January, said Bob Ankeny, owner of Ankeny Builders in Blue Earth, Minn.

Ankeny Builders has been contracted to build the new grocery store.

As per Brothers Market's request, the city would pay $200,000 and reimburse 70 percent of the property taxes over 10 years.

The Cascade City Council will take up the agreement at its Oct. 12 meeting, said City Administrator Randy Lansing.

"I say that it's a formality for the council to approve the package, but we are going through the procedure," Lansing said.

The Telegraph Herald was unable to reach the DeVries or Brothers Market management for this story.

The community has been without a supermarket since 2006, when Cascade Country Food Mart closed.

Cascade city officials have been in contact with Brothers Market ownership since March after efforts to land Sigourney-based K & L Foods fell through.

"You won't find nicer people to do business with," Staner said. "Working with these guys for the last six months has been nothing but a pleasure.

The city has had its ups and downs in vying for a grocery store.

The United States Department of Agriculture's Rural Development program denied the city's request for a $700,000 loan in September 2008. Cascade scored 165 points on its loan evaluation, five short of the 170 points needed to receive funding.

A second loan application to the USDA was successful in February.

Inconvenient grocery trips to Dubuque, Dyersville and Monticello will soon be over for Cascade residents, and Staner couldn't be happier.

"For our community alone, this is huge," the mayor said. "Small communities can't keep growing unless you have a grocery store."
