Local youth attend holstein convention
Seventeen youth represented Iowa at the 2009 National Holstein Convention held in Sacramento, Calif., from June 24 to 30.

Ten of those youth were from Dubuque County, including Kayla Demmer, of Peosta, who was distinguished as a junior member semifinalist and received a National Holstein women's scholarship.

Holstein breeders from across the United States attend the convention that is the annual meeting of Holstein Association USA, the national Holstein dairy cattle breed organization.

Here's how Dubuque County youth fared:

First place

* Senior Dairy Quiz Bowl: Jordan Hanson, Leah Henkes, Jessica Hammerand, of Epworth, and Luke Rauen, of Farley.

* Digital Scrapbook: Racheal Demmer and Kayla Demmer, of Peosta, and Megan Rauen, of Farley.

* Intermediate Folding Board Display: Jessica Hammerand, of Epworth.

* Senior Folding Board Display: Kayla Demmer, of Peosta.

Second place

* Dairy Jeopardy: Kyle Demmer, of Peosta.

* Traditional Scrapbook: Becca Bahl, of Dubuque, and Jessica Hammerand, of Epworth.

Third place

* Dairy Jeopardy: Matt Henkes, of Epworth.
