ELIZABETH, Ill. - A 54-year-old Dubuque man faces eight different charges after authorities say he attempted to flee from law enforcement during a traffic stop, lost control of his vehicle, and smashed into vehicles parked on a car lot.
William R. McBain, was stopped by the Jo Daviess County Sheriff's Department at approximately 11:01 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 6 on U.S. 20 east of North Vine Street in Elizabeth. Authorities say McBain was traveling 75 mph in a 55-mph zone.
McBain drove away during the traffic stop, according to authorities, attempting to flee. A deputy followed McBain as the driver traveled east on U.S. 20.
McBain lost control of the vehicle and crashed into a utility pole, breaking it off at ground level. McBain's vehicle then crashed into four vehicles parked at the Elizabeth Garage.
Flying debris from the crash broke a window in a building located at 233 N. Main St.
McBain was transported to Midwest Medical Center in Galena, where he was treated for minor injuries.
He faces charges of speeding, aggravated fleeing or attempting to elude a peace officer, improper lane usage, driving too fast for conditions, failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident, driving while license revoked, illegal transportation of alcohol as a driver and driving under the influence.
The Illinois State Police, Elizabeth Fire and Ambulance and police departments from Elizabeth, Hanover, Galena and Stockton assisted the Jo Daviess County Sheriff's Department at the scene.
