Demolition of a historic casino hotel started Tuesday along the banks of the Mississippi River in Marquette, Iowa.
The Isle of Capri Hotel, a 25-room facility located on a bluff overlooking the Mississippi, was being demolished after closing on Oct. 1.
Demolition should be completed in the next three days, said Tina Sander, advertising coordinator for the Lady Luck Casino in Marquette.
Sander did not have an exact date when the Isle of Capri opened, but believed the hotel, also known as the Port of Marquette Hotel and the Hotel on the Bluff, had operated since the early 1970s.
The casino changed its name from The Isle of Capri Casino to Lady Luck Casino in December 2008 as part of a $3 million branding campaign.
The Isle spent $300,000 to upgrade the hotel, but age and lack of Americans with Disabilities Act compliance factored into its decision to demolish the building.
"We're working closely with the city (of Marquette) on what should happen next up on the hill. It's a beautiful view out there. We would hate to lose it."
