Vision Iowa approves grant for trail along river

The Vision Iowa Board's Community Attraction and Tourism Board has approved a $225,000 grant for the construction of 4.8 miles of trail along the Turkey River from Clermont to Elgin running along the River Bluffs Scenic Byway. The Turkey River will cross the trail three times, with six access points to the Turkey River Water Trail.

In addition, a pedestrian extension on a vehicular bridge will be added at one of the river crossing points. The total cost of the project is $1,167,367, with the rest of the funding coming from regional trail money and an in-kind match from Fayette County. This is the first phase of the Turkey River Corridor Trail that will run from Clermont to Elkader.

"As chairman of the Iowa Economic Growth Committee, I am excited to see the first phase of the corridor that will help spur tourism in the Elkader, Elgin and Clermont areas come together," said state Rep. Roger Thomas, D-Elkader. "Expanding recreational trails in our communities improves the quality of life for everyone here. I'm glad the state is working with us to improve amenities along the Turkey River."
