Herman: Resignation will help university
CHAMPAIGN, Ill. -- Former University of Illinois Chancellor Richard Herman said in an interview published Sunday that he thinks the school's Urbana-Champaign campus will be able to "move forward" now that he has resigned.
Herman told The News-Gazette of Champaign that "this clears the way for the institution to move forward beyond the admissions issue." Herman resigned last Tuesday and trustees accepted his resignation on Friday.
His resignation came after months of pressure over special attention the school paid to politically connected applicants.
5 Iowa communities to celebrate units' return
DES MOINES -- The Iowa Army National Guard is planning homecoming ceremonies in five communities to mark the return of units mobilized as part of efforts in Iraq.
The celebrations are planned for Wednesday in Audubon at the high school, the Johnson County 4-H Fairgrounds in Iowa City, North Iowa Fairgrounds in Mason City, at the high school in Perry and the community college in Marshalltown.
Police: Man called a zombie before assault
IOWA CITY -- Iowa City police are investigating an early morning assault in which a man accused another of being a zombie, then punched him twice.
Police said the assault occurred at 1:17 a.m. Sunday at an Iowa City restaurant south of the University of Iowa campus. The suspect then ran out a back door.
The victim suffered a broken nose and was taken by ambulance to a hospital.
Milwaukee kayaker still missing
DULUTH, Minn. -- A search for a Milwaukee kayaker who went missing Tuesday while paddling along the north shore of Lake Superior in Minnesota came up empty on Sunday.
A dispatcher for the Lake County sheriff's office said the search for 48-year-old Douglas Winter was over before 4 p.m.
On Saturday morning, authorities believe they found Winter's life jacket on the lake shore near Split Rock Lighthouse.
