Clayton County sheriff has not released names of those involved.

LUANA, Iowa -- A shooting Sunday morning sent a Clayton County Sheriff's Department deputy and a 35-year-old man to the hospital.

The incident occurred around 12:15 a.m. in the town of Luana, according to Clayton County Sheriff Mike Tschirgi.

The sheriff's deputy and the suspect were involved in a physical altercation after a high-speed chase.

Tschirgi declined to release further details or the identities of those involved.

"That's all we are giving out at this time until the investigation is complete," he said.

The sheriff's deputy and the suspect suffered serious injuries and were transported to the Central Community Hospital in Elkader. Both of them were treated and released.

The suspect is being held in the Clayton County Jail on charges of eluding police, second offense operating while intoxicated, assaulting a police officer, failure to obey a stop sign and driving on the wrong side of the highway.

Bond has been set at $13,000.

The Prairie du Chien (Wis.) Police Department has been contacted to conduct an independent investigation of the incident.
