Sheriff not releasing details on shooting

The Clayton County Sheriff's Department will not release further information about Sunday's duty-related shooting involving a sheriff's deputy and a 35-year-old man until next week.

Sheriff Mike Tschirgi said the identities of the sheriff's deputy and the suspect will be released once the independent investigation by the Prairie du Chien (Wis.) Police Department is complete.

The incident occurred around 12:15 a.m. in the town of Luana, according to Tschirgi. The sheriff's deputy and the suspect were involved in a physical altercation after a high-speed chase.

Both suffered serious injuries and were transported to the Central Community Hospital in Elkader, where they were treated and released.

The suspect is being held in the Clayton County Jail on charges of eluding police, second offense operating while intoxicated, assaulting a police officer, failure to obey a stop sign and driving on the wrong side of the highway. Bond has been set at $13,000.
