When did Dubuque lift curfew? Could it return?
1997 was the last time a juvenile curfew ordinance went before the City Council.
TELEGRAPH HERALD

Question: When was the curfew in Dubuque lifted and would the city consider reinstating it?

Answer: There has been no official mention of a curfew discussion in City Council proceedings since 1997.

The City Clerk's Office reviewed City Council proceedings as far back as 1944 to discover information about a curfew in Dubuque.

Mansion Row Architecture Book notes that the original bell in City Hall rang the curfew.

The bell existed from 1857 to 1954, when it was removed with the cupola. It was restored in 1991.

The 1912 Code of Ordinances index mentions "curfew hours," but no details of the hours are noted.

City Council proceedings indicate council discussion of a juvenile curfew in 1967, 1968 and 1971, but no action was taken in those years.

A proposed juvenile curfew ordinance went before the City Council in May 1997, but the motion to consider the first reading of the ordinance failed.
