In its October edition, the Iowa State Bar Association's Iowa Lawyer magazine profiled Dubuque attorney David Hammer, his five-decade

law practice and his nearly as long writing career.

Hammer has no idea how many cases he has handled in his career, but he can count 26 books to his credit. The latest, published in January, is "For the Record: My Name is Hammer." It recounts some of his most memorable court cases as a trial lawyer. The title "comes from his customary introduction of himself to jurors," the article says of Hammer.

The article examines Hammer's writing style. "He writes quickly, sometimes completing a book in one sitting," it says. "Most of the books are related in some way to Sherlock Holmes," and some are written in the style of Holmes' creator, Sir Conan Doyle, the article notes.

Collins selected for Irish Education 100

Loras College President Jim Collins was selected as one of the Irish Education 100, an inaugural list by the Irish Voice Newspaper and Irish America Magazine of distinguished and accomplished educators of Irish descent in North America.

Honorees represent a broad spectrum of education leaders, including university presidents, board of trustee members and other dedicated educators.

Collins was nominated for the recognition by Andrew Auge, professor of English and director of the Irish studies minor.

"It is truly an honor to be recognized by a group that not only focuses on quality education but on Irish heritage," Collins said. "Loras is proud of our connections to Ireland through our Irish studies minor, study-abroad program and ongoing research collaborations with the Institute of Art, Design and Technology in Dun Laoghaire, Ireland."

A special Irish Education 100 supplement was published in the Oct. 7 edition of the newspaper, and a reception and award ceremony took place on Oct. 8 at the American Irish Historical Society in New York City.
