Jobless rates decline in SW Wisconsin

Unemployment rates dropped for the third straight month in southwest Wisconsin.

According to the Wisconsin Department of Workforce Development, the jobless rate declined a full percentage point in Grant County, from 7.1 percent in August to 6.1 percent in September.

The unemployment rate dropped from 8.8 percent to 8.1 percent in Crawford County, from 6.4 percent to 6.2 percent in Iowa County and from 6.8 percent to

6 percent in Lafayette County. Wisconsin's jobless rate declined from 8.4 percent in August to 7.7 percent in September.

The national jobless rate rose to 9.8 percent in September, the highest since June 1983, as employers cut far more jobs than expected.
