Board: Plane low on fuel when it crashed

DES MOINES -- Federal aviation officials say a small plane that crashed in a corn field in northwest Iowa, killing all three Wisconsin men on board, was low on fuel.

In a report last week, the National Transportation Safety Board said the single-engine Piper had two 25-gallon fuel tanks. After the crash, investigators drained 1 cup of fuel from the tank under the left wing and 2 1/2 cups from the tank under the right wing.

The plane crashed on June 23 near Sheldon in O'Brien County.

The three men on board -- Francis Allegretti, of Cambridge, Wis., Thomas Boos, of Fort Atkinson, Wis., and Malcolm McMillan, of Milton, Wis. -- were flying from Fort Atkinson to South Dakota on a hunting trip.

Wisconsin highway fatalities down 11%

MADISON, Wis. -- With two months left in the year, Wisconsin continues its trend of fewer people being killed in highway crashes.

The Department of Transportation reported that as of late last week, 441 people have died in accidents -- or 57 fewer than at the same time a year ago. That's an 11 percent drop.

Last year, traffic crashes on Wisconsin roads and highways killed 587 people -- 150 fewer than in 2007 and the lowest total in 64 years.

Traffic safety experts have attributed the decline in fatalities, in part, to reduced driving because of the poor economy.

The drop in deaths is dramatic compared with another era. The Transportation Department says that from 1964 through 1973, more than 1,000 traffic deaths occurred each year in Wisconsin, including 1,168 in 1972, the deadliest in state history.

Arrest made in weekend shooting

CEDAR RAPIDS -- A Hiawatha man has been arrested in connection with a weekend shooting that left another man with life-threatening injuries.

Cedar Rapids police said Monday that Timothy Lamont Reynolds has been arrested in connection with the shooting of 38-year-old Christopher Pearson. Authorities said officers responding to reports of shots fired found the victim on the ground Sunday. He was taken to a nearby hospital with life-threatening injuries.

The 17-year-old Reynolds was charged as an adult with attempted murder.

Confrontation escalates to shooting

TOWN OF SCOTT, Wis. -- Brown County sheriff's deputies are investigating a fatal confrontation in the Town of Scott.

Authorities said four men went to a residence to confront an 18-year-old man about an earlier incident. Deputies weren't more specific about what had happened earlier.

The 18-year-old was armed with a shotgun and shot one of the men twice in the chest. The 29-year-old Green Bay area man was pronounced dead at the scene.

The suspect was arrested without incident.
