AP NEWS BREAK: Doctors advising patients with heart conditions to avoid watching Iowa games.
This week’s games and commentary:
(FBS) No. 8 Iowa 30, Northwestern 27 (Line: Iowa by 16) — Take the Wildcats to beat the spread. A 16-point line for a Hawkeye team that has to be on its eighth life by now is crazy. But this week’s SI Cover Boys and the miracle team with comeback wins in eight of nine games will find a way (the only magic trick Iowa hasn’t pulled is a game-winning blocked extra point) to scrape out 10-0 start.
Wisconsin 33, Indiana 20 (Line: Wisconsin by 11) — If the game was only 30 minutes, the Hoosiers could be a BCS team. Indiana is one of country’s best first-half teams and worst second-half clubs (see blown 25-point lead against Northwestern and lost 14-point lead versus Hawkeyes).
Oklahoma State 28, Iowa State 17 (Line: Oklahoma State by 7.5) — Even with Austen Arnaud back, lethargic Cyclone offense doesn’t have Energizer battery needed to run with Cowboy offense that has put up 35 points or more in five games.
Minnesota 20, Illinois 17 (Line: Minnesota by 6) -- 5-4 Gophers playing for a bowl game, 2-6 Fighting Illini playing for pride.
Loras 19, Cornell 12 — Sometimes the schedule can be a great team doctor. The perfect medication for the struggling Duhawks is a Rams team that has dropped 34 straight Iowa Conference games.
Luther 23, Dubuque 20 — Norse’s top-ranked IIAC pass defense assigning Air Force squadron to defend unstoppable Michael Zweifel, who needs 10 catches to reach 100 for the season. Watch for former TH Player of the Year Kyle McGivney. The Warren star turned Luther defensive stopper has made a league-leading 114 tackles.
UW-Stout 30, UW-Platteville 17 — Pioneers coach Mike Emendorfer has played musical quarterbacks this season looking for a spark. Freshman John Kelly had a nice 30-for-48, 244-yard, two-touchdown debut against River Falls. But Stout defense is, well, much more stout than WIAC last-place River Falls.
(FBS) No. 3 Alabama 24, No. 9 Louisiana State 23 (Line: Alabama by 9) — In a matchup of nearly identical SEC powers, Crimson Tide quarterback Greg McElroy will make the plays to keep Alabama in the lead to reach the BCS Championship Game.
(FBS) No. 11 Penn State 26, No. 16 Ohio State 24 (Line: Penn State by 4) Despite a truckload of All-Americans, Buckeyes offense just 63rd in the country and this clash is in Happy Valley.
(FBS) No. 7 Oregon 40, Stanford 28 (Line: Oregon by 5) — The Cardinal a possible trip game for Ducks, who are the No. 2 team in the country if you believe the math-based Sagarin Ratings.
(FBS) No. 7 Boise State 38, Louisiana Tech 13 (Line: Boise State by 21) — The BCS-busting Broncos are becoming college football’s Gonzaga — the mid-major most everyone loves to root for.
Last week: 6-4.
Season to date: 59-31.
