Block ousts incumbent in Guttenberg

GUTTENBERG, Iowa -- Former mayor and police chief Gerald "Red" Block ousted incumbent Jim Solomon for the city's mayoral seat with 67 percent of the votes cast.

Block, who won 508 votes to Solomon's 247, told the TH earlier in the campaign that his main platform issue was the controversial dismissal of Police Chief George Morteo last March.

Guttenberg council seat winners were newcomers Steve Friedlein, John Hess and Ralph Livingston.

Results elsewhere in Clayton County were:

On the Elkader City Council, Curtis Rusher and incumbents Roger Buchholz and Daryl Koehn won the three open seats. Rusher had 28 percent of the vote, Buchholz had 27 percent and Koehn had 19 percent out of 717 total votes cast.

On the Strawberry Point City Council, Jacci Meyers with 31 percent and Richard Newman with 39 percent won the two open council seats in a race with 366 votes cast.

In North Buena Vista, the five open council seats were filled by Patrick Diesburg with 17 percent, Lyndon Ludovissy with 18 percent and Donald Riniker with 18 percent, David Breitbach with 16 percent and James Gordon with 11 percent in a race with 288 votes.

Council winners for Clayton's five open seats were Harland Grunder with 22 percent of the votes, David Hart with 22 percent of the votes, Brent Walser with 18 percent, Tim Brandel with 16 percent and Dean Schultz with 16 percent out of a total of 116 votes.

In Garnavillo, the three open council seats went to Lyndon Meyer with 25 percent, Bob Bodish with 24 percent and Carl Kuehl with 14 percent out of 611 votes cast.

In McGregor, Gaylinda Hallberg won the mayoral race with 74 percent of the vote and three council seats were won by Jason Bogdonovich, Joseph Collins and Jason Solberg despite three absentee votes for three other candidates.

Norma Mason won the Marquette mayoral race with 95 percent of the vote and Rinda Ferguson, Tracy Melver and Mary Jo Pirc won council seats with a smattering of single votes also cast for three other candidates.
