John Sewell earned his award by removing three quarters of a mile of old barbed wire fencing from the Lost Canyon and Whitewater Canyon Wilderness areas near Cascade. The project helped restore natural plant and animal movement throughout the area.
Sewel, son of Gary and Linda Sewell, Asbury, Iowa, is a graduate of Hempstead High School and currently attends the University of Iowa.
Spencer Washburn earned his award by designing and constructing a compass orienteering course at Hoover Elementary School, Dubuque. The course will be used to augment the science curriculum for Hoover students and also be available to the public.
Washburn, son of Karl and Cheri Washburn, Le Claire, Iowa, is a graduate of Hempstead High School and is currently attending the University of Chicago.
