Graduation day in Dubuque Drug Court
Former crack addict is the first graduate of the program designed for non-violent drug offenders.

Guy Richman arrived at the courthouse, clad in a dark-blue suit, tie and neatly-cropped hair.

Then, the recovering crack cocaine addict walked into a courtroom and took a seat next to 12 fellow drug offenders.

Like them, Richman joined the Dubuque and Delaware County Drug Court program, designed for habitual, non-violent drug offenders. Nearly one year ago, he nervously walked up to the podium and proclaimed how many days he’d been sober. By Thursday, he said he had racked up 496 days.

After a year of hard work, Richman, 48, became the first graduate from the program and spent the afternoon talking to local lawmakers about his success.

“This is the only thing that worked in my life in the past 30 years,” Richman said.
