2nd graders collect food for campaign
All it took was one week and a whole lot of enthusiasm.
Students and staff at Eisenhower Elementary School collected more than 1,700 food items for the Dubuque Food Pantry in its first "Squash the Hunger" campaign.
About 20 second-grade students whose class donated the most food items loaded a white pick-up truck with all the food items on a breezy Monday afternoon.
The students also won a special art class where they will decorate gourds for Thanksgiving.
The campaign was sponsored by the Eisenhower Parent Teacher Association.
Hempstead students compete in car skills
Five Hempstead High School students competed in the 18th annual Des Moines Area Community College Automotive Skills Contest recently at the DMACC Ankeny Campus.
They competed against more than 300 students representing 18 Iowa high schools in the written portion of the contest.
Eight two-member teams of Iowa high school automotive students qualified for the hands-one portion of the Automotive Skills Contest by having the highest average scores on the written test. The Hempstead students did not qualify for that portion of the contest.
