The Dubuque Archdiocese Office of Hispanic Ministry in Dubuque has a Hispanic deacon to support its work.
Permanent Deacon Horacio Quiles, ordained in July, is assigned to the ministry and to St. Patrick Parish. Quiles is one of five permanent deacons ordained this year in the archdiocese who are of Hispanic origin.
"He is a huge support to the ministry. He brings a Hispanic viewpoint to things," said Sister Jeanette McCarthy, director of the ministry.
Among his duties, Quiles preaches at both Spanish and English Masses, performs baptisms and marriages, offers blessings and ministers at the Dubuque County jail.
Quiles hails from Jalisco, Mexico, and has lived in Dubuque 13 years with his wife, Socorro, and their three children.
