SABULA, Iowa -- A Sabula man shot outside of a downtown bar in November remains hospitalized, according to a Jackson County official.
Police say Sheldon Woodhurst, 46, was shot outside of Lucky 7 Bar in Sabula around 1:30 a.m. on Nov. 22.
David P. Zabransky, 46, of Palatine, Ill., has been charged with attempted murder. He's free after posting a $25,000 cash bond and awaits an arraignment Dec. 18 in Jackson County District Court.
Jackson County Attorney Chris Raker said Woodhurst remains at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City.
"The investigation is ongoing," Raker said. "We are looking at motives."
According to a criminal complaint, Zabransky shot Woodhurst in the abdomen following a disturbance at the bar.
Woodhurst was taken to Mercy Hospital in Clinton and later airlifted to Iowa City.
Zabransky has filed for public defender representation, Raker said, but there's a possibility that could change.
"I'm not certain who is going to represent him," Raker said. "A private attorney has contacted me to say they are in discussions."
The Iowa Department of Criminal Investigation, the Jackson County Sheriff's Department and the Sabula Police Department are investigating.
"My understanding is (investigators) have largely canvassed everybody they wanted to interview," Raker said.
Investigators also have sent evidence to the state crime lab in Ankeny and are waiting on results.
Sheriff Russ Kettmann was out of the office Friday and unavailable for comment.
Sabula Police Chief Josh Kilburg did not return a call seeking comment.
