According to an independent study, a 24-diamond youth baseball and softball complex on the "Field of Dreams" movie site near Dyersville, Iowa, would provide an economic boon - including more than 1,000 jobs and an economic impact of better than $40 million over eight years - to a six-county area in northeast Iowa.

Strategic Economics Group, based in Des Moines, conducted an economic and fiscal impact study on the prospective project, which is being touted by Mike and Denise Stillman of Go the Distance LLC. The Stillmans are in the process of purchasing the iconic movie site and 193 acres of land on which it rests from the Lansing family, which has owned the property since 1906. The Stillmans hope to build All-Star Ballpark Heaven, which they say would be the largest youth baseball and softball complex in the Midwest.

I hope the story explains where they come up with these numbers. If they are using the same calculator as city hall does, it may be a fairy tale. I do wish the owners the best of luck.

I hope for the best, but that seems a bit idealistic. Let's see the nubmers before putting tax dollars towards the project when we have county bridges we can't afford to even reopen at the moment.
