LANCASTER, Wis. -- Lancaster High School was on lockdown for about 45 minutes Thursday as school officials investigated a rumor of a student with a gun.
School officials received a tip about noon that a student in school had a gun.
Principal Mark Uppena said staff put the school on lockdown while officials and members of the Lancaster Police Department conducted a search of lockers and other areas for a gun. No gun was found, and interviews with students revealed some students had been play fighting and another student confronted them and then walked away. Another student made a comment about that student being the one with a gun.
"The rumor ran wild from there," Uppena said. "But it's not something we take lightly, and I'm proud of how our staff handled the situation."
The principal said he planned to inform parents of the incident Thursday night and school would be in session as normal today.
