PLATTEVILLE, Wis. -- The University of Wisconsin-Platteville Department of Humanities and French and German clubs are sponsoring the 17th annual Fasching/Carnaval from 5 to 9 p.m. today, in Velzy Commons, Ullsvik Hall.

Also known as Mardi Gras in the United States, Fasching/Carnaval is a time to celebrate life before Lent. This year's celebration features free beads, snacks, games and prizes for kids of all ages, activities such as mask making, face painting and creative costuming, an audience-participation bingo game and live music provided by the Barehanded Wolfchokers Band. Costumes are encouraged.

French and German food and beverages will be available for purchase.

A container will be available for donations for the Medecins Sans Frontières, or Doctors Without Borders, organization.

Financial support for the event is provided by SUFAC and the UW-P Department of Humanities.
