MAQUOKETA, Iowa — Police said culprits broke into a Maquoketa restaurant, used “some type of torch or heat source” to open a safe and stole an undisclosed amount of cash.
Maquoketa police were called shortly after 7 a.m. Thursday when a delivery driver noticed a problem at Happy Joe’s. Officers determined the business had been broken into overnight.
They also thought the safe in the office “looked to be blown open somehow,” according to a press release. Due to the possibility that it had been opened with “an unknown type of incinerating device,” police called in the Iowa State Fire Marshal Division to investigate. The investigator determined there hadn’t been an explosion, but that a torch or heat source was used on the safe.
The incident remains under investigation.
