A woman found dead near the old Savanna Army Depot in northwestern Illinois appears to have committed suicide.

The Carroll County (Ill.) Sheriff's Department was called at 2:30 p.m. Wednesday for an abandoned vehicle near Lost Mound Conservation Area. A large-scale search was done of the area on Wednesday and Thursday, and the body of a woman was found at 9:15 a.m. Thursday along the backwaters of the Mississippi River. The woman appeared to have died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

The department, along with the county coroner's office, will work together to identify the woman. The department said the investigation is ongoing.

The Illinois State Patrol, Jo Daviess County Sheriff's Department, Hanover Ambulance, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and the fire departments in Hanover, Elizabeth, Savanna and Shannon assisted.
