Quad/Graphics confirmed Thursday it will cut from 50 to 60 jobs at the Kerper Boulevard plant in Dubuque by the end of the year.

The Sussex, Wis.-based company also cut 24 jobs at the Dubuque plant in May and said it was "looking at ways to maximize its efficiency and competitive platform," according to Claire Ho, director of corporate communications.

The company began notifying some employees of cutbacks on Wednesday and plans to give the affected employees at least 30 days notice that their jobs are being eliminated in Dubuque.

Ho said the company will offer the displaced employees positions at other plants around the country. She added that if they are unwilling to accept one of those positions, they will be offered a separation package that includes severance pay, extension of health care benefits and assistance in finding a new job.

After the final cuts are made, Ho said, the Dubuque plant will have about 200

"Decisions like these are never easy for us to make as a company and we appreciate the tradition of quality work that employees have produced in Dubuque," Ho said.

Quad/Graphics is planning to release its second-quarter 2012 results during a conference call on Aug. 8 and Ho said the company was not allowed to disclose second-quarter performance prior to that day.

First-quarter earning results ending March 31 and released in May showed earnings down 3.1 percent from the first quarter of 2011, but Quad/Graphics President and CEO Joel Quadracci called the first-quarter 2012 performance a "solid start to the year."

Rick Dickinson, president and CEO of Greater Dubuque Development Corporation, declined comment. City Council member Joyce Connors, who represents the city's Third Ward, which includes Quad Graphics, was unavailable for comment.
