EDGEWOOD, Iowa -- Merten L. "Mert" Miller, 79, of Edgewood, Iowa, died Monday, Oct. 19, 2009, at Regional Medical Center, Manchester.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Friday, Oct. 23, at Trinity United Methodist Church, Edgewood, with the Rev. Mike Jackson officiating. Friends may call from 3 to 7 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 22, at Leonard-Muller Funeral Home, Edgewood. Friends also may call after 9 a.m. Friday at the church.
He was born on March 27, 1930, in Cresco, son of Earl and Maria (Mertens) Miller. He was raised in Cresco and graduated from Cresco High School in 1948. He then attended Upper Iowa University in Fayette.
Mert was drafted to the Army and honorably served stateside.
He married Jayne Smock on June 15, 1958, at Greeley Methodist Church. Two daughters were born to this union. They made their home in Edgewood, where Mert owned Miller Underground Construction.
He was a member of the Trinity United Methodist Church, the American Legion and a 50-year member of the Masons. He was very involved in his community. He volunteered with the Boy Scouts, helping with numerous projects at Camp Klaus. He was a firefighter for 40-plus years and volunteered many hours to help with the high school sports complex.
Mert was always willing to share his opinion or to lend a hand or a shovel.
Surviving are his wife, Jayne, of Edgewood; two daughters, Lisa (David) Kramer, of Dyersville, and Julie (John) Zuber, of Amana; and five grandchildren, Brandon Kramer, Chelsey Kramer, Robbie Kramer, Seth Lynch and William Zuber.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
