James V. Finn, 79, of 732 Perry St., Dubuque, passed away Tuesday morning, May 29, 2012, at home, after a courageous battle with cancer.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, June 2, at St. Columbkille's Catholic Church, Dubuque, with the Rev. Gabriel Anderson officiating. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery, Cascade, Iowa. Friends may call from 3 to 8 p.m. Friday, June 1, at Siegert-Casper Colonial Funeral Home and Cremation Service, 390 N. Grandview Ave., where there will be a parish wake service at 7:30 p.m.

He was born on April 19, 1933, in Temple Hill, Iowa, in the family farm house, son of Clarence and Bertha (Keating) Finn. He attended Temple Hill School.

Jim farmed with his father and worked as a carpenter in Cascade. He then became a welder at John Deere Dubuque Works for 30 years, where he retired in 1995.

He married Sheila M. Kane on June 9, 1959, at St. Joseph's Prairie Church, Dubuque; she preceded him in death on Aug. 10, 2009. The past year and a half, Jim enjoyed spending time with his special friend, Sally Trenkamp, of Dyersville, Iowa.

He was a member of St. Columbkille's Parish for more than 40 years, UAW Local 94 and the John Deere Retirees.

Jim loved to dance and enjoyed country and big band dances throughout the years. He liked reading, exercise, golf, spending time with his grandchildren and great-grandchild, watching Lawrence Welk and the Chicago Cubs. He loved to travel to many places in the United States and went to Ireland and England.

Surviving are a special friend, Sally Trenkamp, of Dyersville; three children, Charlotte (Ron) Leick, of Dubuque, David (Sandra) Finn, of San Marcos, Calif., and Paul (Cheryl) Finn, of Modesto, Calif.; four grandchildren, Kyle (Kerstien Hartley) Leick, of Dubuque, Randi Finn, of Phoenix, Taylor Finn, of San Marcos, and Connor Finn, of San Marcos; a stepgrandson, Bruce Lyles, of Modesto; a stepgranddaughter, Tiffany (Randy) Novak, of Lake Tahoe, Calif.; a great-granddaughter, Aubrie Leick, of Dubuque; a stepgreat-grandson, Colton Novak, of Lake Tahoe; four siblings, Rosemary Gessner, of Newhall, Iowa, Tommy (Rita) Finn, of Marion, Iowa, Grace Claus, of Cascade, and Ray (Mary) Finn, of Temple Hill; a sister-in-law, Dolores Finn; a brother-in-law, Johnny (Patty) Kane, of Epworth, Iowa; and many nieces and nephews, and great-nieces and nephews.

He also was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Justin Finn; brothers-in-law, Herman Claus and Arnold Gessner; and a niece, Ruth Claus.

Memorials may be given to the James V. Finn Memorial Fund.
